Betty A.
Hallgren
November 2, 1937 – February 28, 2022
Betty A. Hallgren, 84, died peacefully at home on February 28 in Marco Island, Florida. Her six children and other beloved family members were with her in the last days of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn A. Hallgren, infant son Bruce, son-in-law Gordon McCally, brother James Romary and parents Cyril and Thelma Romary.
Betty was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., and attended the Cathedral Grade School and Central Catholic High School. Betty loved to ice skate and played tennis at Lakeside Park, where her husband Glenn of 52 years first noticed her. She raised six children with Glenn in Fort Wayne, where they lived most of their life. Following Glenn's passing in 2007, Betty alternated between her home in Noblesville, Indiana, and Marco Island, where she lived with her daughter Julie (Ric) Maly and enjoyed many visitors.
Betty was resilient, cheerful, and fun. She had a great sense of humor and never knew a stranger. Betty loved going to the grocery store and visiting with people as she shopped for her family. She told wonderful stories and held your gaze - and your arm - when she told them. Learning about the lives of others that she encountered in the simple routine of life was a joy to her. Loving Betty was like taking a master class in enjoying the sweetness of life.
Betty was a great-grandmother to twenty-two and a dearly beloved grandmother to sixteen. Anne, Heather, Emily, Adam, Molly, Eric, Jill, Libby, John, Abbey, Nick, Madeline, Grant,
Charlie, Haley, and Harper will treasure their memories of Betty's sharp wit, holidays together, as well as playing board games and dining out at Mexican restaurants with her. She was on Facebook and liked to Facetime with kids and grandkids. Betty delighted in getting cash from the bank and firmly believed that McDonald's had the best fish sandwich but conceded that Arby's was a close second during Lent. She liked to watch basketball and football and took great pleasure in anticipation of a big game. She wished Indiana would recruit a decent point guard and would love to tell you why.
Betty is survived by her sisters Carol Korhman and Pat (Les) Berkheiser and six children; Debbie (Brad) Hull, Jeff (Mary) Hallgren, Julie (Ric) Maly, Denise (Mike) Hutchinson, Kelly (Ralph) Prindle, Chris (Wendy) Hallgren.
Betty's funeral mass will be at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1102 S. Clinton Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. Calling from friends will be from one hour prior.
