BETTY JANE BURNS, 88, of Fort Wayne, died Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Saint Anne Home, Fort Wayne, Ind. Born May 18, 1929 in Fort Wayne, she was a daughter of Arthur Nile Hinkle and Ethel Lucille (Betty) Miller and the oldest of five children. In her younger years Betty worked at Seyfert’s Potato Chip factory where she met her husband, Walt. Betty was a cashier at Roger’s Market on South Anthony Blvd. for 20-plus years before her retirement. After retirement she enjoyed volunteering at the Franciscan Center in Fort Wayne. The love of Betty’s life was her family – especially her children. She loved kids and she and Walt had seven of their own. She loved cooking and baking and was always trying out new recipes she found in her 100-plus cookbooks. Betty also loved flowers, birds, and collecting mother-and-daughter statues. Each Spring the family home was transformed into a sea of color and activity by the many, many, many flowers and bird feeders adorning the yard. The yard was a place of beauty and the home was a place of love. Memories of large family celebrations such as Christmas, Easter, and the famous Burns Birthday Bashes, will forever remain in the hearts of family and friends. Everyone was welcomed and everyone was loved. Betty converted to the Catholic faith when she met Walt, and she and Walt were lifelong members of St. Henry Catholic Church parish on the southeast side of Fort Wayne close to their home. Walt and Betty were pillars in their faith – going to daily Mass, saying the Rosary as a family and making sure all seven kids were able to attend St. Henry Elementary School and Bishop Luers High School. Betty also loved watching Purdue (Boilermaker) football and was known for her delicious homemade BBQ sauce she would take to tail gate parties. Everyone was family to her and so many called her ‘mom’. Her family meals, wonderfully detailed stories, abundant flowers and strong faith will be missed by many. She is survived by her seven children, Ken (Marilyn) Burns, Kevin Burns, Karen Ostoich of Carmel, Ind., Kay Burns (Keith Kilpatrick), Kyle (Lisa) Burns, Keith (Sheila) Burns, and Kristopher (Doreen) Burns of Cary, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and many, many nieces, nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Walter J. Burns; sister, Mary Kathryn (Katie) Sievers; brothers, William (Wilma) Hinkle, Barry Hinkle, James Hinkle; and son-in-law, Eli Ostoich. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at Saint Henry Catholic Church, 2929 East Paulding Rd., with calling one hour prior. Visitation also from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2018, with a Rosary at 3:30 p.m., at Divine Mercy Funeral Home, 3500 Lake Ave., Fort Wayne. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne. Donations can be made to St. Henry’s Outreach Ministries, or Saint Ann Home and Retirement Community. “Goodbye mom. We love you and will miss you always.”
