David Scheumann, 54, of Fort Wayne, passed away on October 13, leaving behind a legacy of faith, courage, and love. A proud Hoosier, Army veteran, devoted Catholic, and cherished son and brother, David faced life’s challenges with quiet strength and a deep trust in God that guided him throughout his life.

After being medically discharged from the Army, David hoped to become a Catholic priest. Although myotonic dystrophy, a progressive neuromuscular disease, prevented him from pursuing that dream, it never diminished his love for God. His courage, humility, and trust in God’s plan remained an inspiration to everyone who knew him.

David was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Fort Wayne. His faith, friendships, and love of God were central to his life. He was also a proud Indiana Hoosiers fan and loved Notre Dame. In July, David visited the University of Notre Dame with his brother Donald and several members of the Knights of Columbus. He prayed at the Grotto and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and he smiled from ear to ear when he saw Touchdown Jesus. The visit became a treasured memory.

Those who knew David knew how much he loved to laugh and play cards. He was a walking sports encyclopedia, always ready to share what he knew about any team. He also spent his mornings praying the Rosary, reflecting the deep faith that meant so much to him.

David will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his strength through hardship, and the love he shared with his family and friends. Although his illness gradually took much of his physical strength, it could never take away the spirit that made him who he was.

David is survived by his parents, Dennis and Rosemarie Scheumann of New Haven; his sister, Karen Stovall (Scheumann) of Indianapolis; and his brother, Donald Scheumann of Fort Wayne.
