With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Debra Jean Nelson, age 69, on May 7, 2026, in the presence of her family. Debra was a devoted wife, loving mother, and compassionate Home Health Care Giver. A long-time member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, she found joy in singing in the choir and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Debra was a true homemaker, embracing her domestic passions through cooking, bird watching, and creating a warm and welcoming home for her loved ones.
Her unwavering faith and love for her family defined her life. Debra will be remembered for her generosity and kindness. She leaves behind a loving family and friends who will cherish her memory. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.
Debra Jean Nelson was born on October 28, 1956, in Muskegan, Michigan, the daughter of Philip and Kathleen (Shields) Gallivan. She married her beloved husband, Jay M. Nelson, on October 21, 1978, in Northville, Michigan, and he survives.
Debra is also survived by her children: Matthew Nelson, Katherine (James) Locia, Anne (Paul) Ensley, and Maria Malhotra, all of Fort Wayne, as well as her late son, Michael Nelson. She is survived by two sisters, Michelle Swanson and Patricia Greaney, one brother, Brian Gallivan, and twelve cherished grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Linda Gallivan, and her son, Michael Nelson.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Divine Mercy Funeral Home, 3500 Lake Avenue, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46805, with the recitation of the rosary at 3:30 P.M. in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 5916 Trier Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana, with additional visitation in the church for one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00.
Interment will be in Catholic Cemetery.
