Donald J. Hatke, 90, died peacefully on November 11, 2018 at St. Anne Home in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was born in Lafayette, Indiana to the late Joseph H. and Margaret C. (Hicks) Hatke on March 17, 1928. He graduated in 1946 from Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Indiana. After graduating from Purdue University in 1950, he served in the Army’s 45th Infantry Division in Korea until 1952. He married Margaret E. Yirga at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Lafayette, Indiana on November 27, 1952. She survives. They resided in Greenfield, IN from 1955 to 2013 where they were active members of St. Michael Catholic Church, serving on multiple committees. He was a board member for the Catholic Community Foundation of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis for several years. His early professional life began at Purina. In 1962, he began his 23 year career at Hancock Bank and Trust, serving as president there for sixteen years. During his banking days, he served on both the Indiana and the American Banker Associations. He thoroughly enjoyed his years as a Rotarian beginning in 1964. Wintering in Florida, golfing, reading, playing euchre, and spending time with family brought him great joy. He was passionate about community service and was a founding member of the Hancock County Community Foundation and served on the board of directors for nine years. His particular passion was for those in need of clean drinking water, especially in third world countries, and thus he began an endowment fund through HCCF. Surviving with his wife of nearly 66 years are his children Morey (Jane) Hatke of St. Peters, MO, Charlene (Randy) Kottlowski of Spring, TX, Janet (Rob) Herman of Knoxville, TN, Mary Jo (Mark) Coffin of New Hill, NC, Karen (Pat) Dunn of Keller, TX and Carol Ann (Chris) Eckrich of Fort Wayne, IN. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, with two more due soon. He was preceded in death by infant sons Larry and Gary, siblings Stanley and Willard Hatke, Maryella Bower and Carol Dillard. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 am November 15, 2018 at Saint Anne Home & Retirement Community Oratory of Saints Joachim and Anne, 1900 Randallia Dr., Fort Wayne, IN 46805 with visitation one hour prior.
