Dr. Robert M.
Schleinkofer
April 8, 1936 – April 28, 2026
Dr. Robert M. Schleinkofer, 90, of Fort Wayne, died peacefully on Tuesday April 28, 2026 in his home. He was born in Fort Wayne on April 8, 1936, the son of the late Nicholas and Beatrice (Wheeler) Schleinkofer. After graduating from Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Bob returned to Fort Wayne and practiced medicine for the next 52 years. On January 12, 1957, Bob married Karen Hiatt, who preceded him in death on July 20, 2020 after 63 years of marriage. He was also preceded by a daughter, Jan Service, and brothers, Raymond and Ronald Schleinkofer.
Dr. Bob is survived by his children, Dave Schleinkofer, Lynne (Daniel) Sordelet, and Rob (Amber) Schleinkofer, all of Fort Wayne, Michael (Vanessa) Schleinkofer of Midlothian VA, and grandchildren Tara (Brycen) Woodley, Tyler (Bella) Schleinkofer, Spencer (Stacia) Service, Bradley Service, Nathan (Audrey White) Schleinkofer, Emily Schleinkofer, Nicholas (Gianna Porfilio) Schleinkofer, Rachel (Andrew) Shepherd, Michael Sordelet, Abigail (Cameron) Kahlenbeck, Andrew Sordelet, Gretchen Schleinkofer, Chloe Schleinkofer, Piper Schleinkofer, 9 great grandchildren and his companion, Barb Tracey.
Dr. Bob was a longtime member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. He served in the National Guard as a captain and as a company physician for International Harvester.
As a dedicated family doctor, his patients became his extended family. In some cases, he cared for four generations in the same family. Had his health and age not caught up with him, there would likely still be a line in the waiting room anxious to see him. A lifelong IU fan, Dr. Bob loved traveling with his family to see Indiana win multiple postseason football games culminating in the national championship this past year. He even begrudgingly accepted that two of his grandkids became Purdue engineering students. He loved talking about wine and cars, especially the red Ferrari.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 - 8:00 PM Sunday May 10, 2026 at Divine Mercy Funeral Home, 3500 Lake Ave. Private entombment in Catholic Cemetery is scheduled for a future date.
