Elizabeth Ann Massey died on August 16, 2018 and arrived in heaven right on time. God was patient as he awaited her embrace. We know this because her Mantra was “God’s not going to take me one minute sooner or one minute later than he wants me!” She was 94 years old.

“Betty” was born on October 1, 1923 to Francis J. & Mary Cecelia Kelly in Gary IN. She had one sister, Patricia and two brothers; James and Jay Brendan. She attended William Woods College in Missouri.

Betty and William F. Massey were united in marriage on August 17, 1946 and together they were blessed with 6 children. They lived in Merrillville IN until 1957, then moved to Chicago Heights IL. In January of 1967 they bought the Wonderspot Resort in Bruce WI. Unfortunately, “Bill” became ill and the resort was sold within a few short years. Independent and faith-filled, Betty purchased the Sandman Motel in Spooner WI. She successfully operated the business for the next 15+ years.

Throughout her life Betty’s convictions were strong and seldom waived. She endured hardships with grace and dignity without whisper of complaint. Betty moved to Ft. Wayne in 1991. She made many new friends upon this new adventure because she was social. She was the one to reach out, never relying on another but making her own happiness. She so enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing cards and visiting the casinos with those friends who made her smile. Most recently scratch-offs still provided that winning chance!

Several years after she moved to Ft. Wayne she met Jim Hinchee and a mutual admiration led to a 20+ year companionship. Together they made many memories traveling and exploring. Their most favorite spot being the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Other travels throughout her life included a trip to Ireland with her Father (his homeland) and Europe and Alaska with good friends. She’d be the first to say she had a good life!

After renting an apartment in Canterbury for 21 years she purchased her condo at the age of 89 (with a 30 year mortgage)! Betty lived and loved life with compassion and wisdom.

Her strong faith led her through her darkest hours with the loss of her husband Bill in 1991, granddaughter- Amanda Massey in 1983, son- Joel Massey in 2014 and grandson- Kyle Massey in 2016. The reunion with them when she touched God’s face, filled her heart like none other on earth.

Betty created quite a legacy~ her beloved children; Sandee (Keith) Simpson of Auburn IN, Timothy Massey of Watertown WI, William (Pam) Massey of Lancaster WI, Joel Massey (deceased), Amy (John) Gerber of Augusta MO and Jeffrey (Vera) Massey of Algonquin IL. Grandchildren; Kelly Vorpahl, Kurt Simpson, Sarah Block, Anne Kietzmann, Laura Blackledge, Paula Humbard, Lee & Tom Massey, Cari Hayes, Nicole Gerber, Beth Shepherd, Brad & Emily Massey. Great Grandchildren Lauren and Brenden Humbard, Zack & Kira Vorpahl, Brady & Caden Simpson, Brooke & Morgan Massey, Anna & Mariah Block, Elijah Blackledge, Sydney, Brandt & Camryn Massey, Noah Hayes, Paige & Nolan Shepherd, Penelope Massey and step-great grandson Austin Burmeister and his daughter Aspen Rose. Special friend Jim Hinchee and caregiver Janet Bruce. Many nieces, nephews, sister-in-law Maureen Kelly and several dear friends.

A very special thank you to the Heartland Hospice team whose care, compassion and support was invaluable.
