Jehle
June 1, 1939 – January 12, 2024
Frederick F. Jehle, 84, of Fort Wayne, died Friday January 12, 2024. Fred was born in McPherson KS on June 1, 1939, the son of (the late) Leo and Helen (Sieger) Jehle. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Benedictine College and served in Army Intelligence during the Cold War. Following his time in the service, Fred earned his PhD from Catholic University of America. Fred worked as a Spanish professor at IPFW for 33 years.
A deeply humble and spiritual man, Fred lived for a short time as a monk before discerning that God was calling him to marriage. He and his wife, Kay (Weber) Jehle, were married 56 years. Kay survives along with their children, Kenneth (Jennifer Smith) Jehle and Kristine (Craig) DiScala, both of Fort Wayne, and 10 grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Susan Horst of Olathe KS and brother, Christopher Jehle of San Francisco CA. In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by brothers, Gregory Jehle and Jon Jehle, and sister, Connie Jehle.
Fred enjoyed computers and technology, always using his skills and talents to help others. He developed many online Spanish materials that taught students from all over the world Spanish verb conjugation. Fred loved the work of Miguel Cervantes, and spent countless hours establishing the online presence of the Cervantes Society of America.
Fred was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, where he served on the Vocations Committee. He also enjoyed his long-standing Bible Study group, and assisted the Cathedral library with digitizing their collection. Fred loved travel (specifically Land Cruise adventures), photography, and most of all, time with his family.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 am Thursday, January 18, 2024 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 4916 Trier Rd. with visitation from 9:30-10:30 am in the church. Visitation is also from 2-4 & 6-8pm Wednesday at Divine Mercy Funeral Home, 3500 Lake Ave. with the Rosary at 3:30pm. Burial in Catholic Cemetery at 2pm. The family would like to express their gratitude to Heartland Hospice's care staff for their loving presence during Fred's final months.
