Gerald (Gary)
Markley
December 15, 1935 – September 5, 2024
Gerald (Gary) Markley, 88, passed into the loving hands of Jesus and his Blessed Mother on September 5th, 2024. Born on December 15th, 1935, in Roanoke Indiana, Gary was the son of the late Roscoe Markley and Nellie (Copeland) Markley. Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice (Betty) Markley on April 18th, 2020. Gary grew up on a farm just outside of Roanoke with siblings Norma, Dan, Clyde and Janet. He graduated from Roanoke High School in 1953 and served 2 years in the Army. Upon his return, he met the love of his life, Betty. They married on June 18th, 1960, at St. John Catholic Church in New Haven IN. Gary's involvement with his family and their church was a testament to his commitment to faith, family and education. At St. Therese, he was an usher, grade school basketball coach, fall festival volunteer, helper of the church grounds, member of the finance committee, and many other volunteer positions throughout his 64-year membership. Together, Gary and Betty raised three children: Mike (Stephanie) Markley, Gregg (Cami) Markley and Jean (Neal) Stegemiller. In 1977, Gary and Betty became guardians to their twin nieces Dianne Miller (Heidenreich) and Darlene Miller due to the unfortunate death of Betty's older sister Catherine and brother-in-law Don Miller. Gary loved all sports. The Bears, Cubs, Indiana Basketball and Notre Dame Football were constants, but he especially loved golf. He spent most of his free time at Brookwood Golf Course. One of his goals in life was to shoot his age and he regularly did that over the past several years. Gary's greatest enjoyment came from supporting his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His 8 grandchildren Chelsea (John), Brittan (Nate), Wade (Lauren), Blake (Mandi), Abbey (Kerry), Brayden, Benton, Alec and 8 great-grandchildren James, Jack, Beau, Cameron, Ava, Josie, Simon and Carter were encouraged with his support at everything they did. Gary was a true friend to many, many people. He will be greatly missed by all.
