James E. Schmitt, 77, of Columbia City, formerly of Fort Wayne, passed away Monday, September 25, 2023 at AMG Hospital in Muncie.

He was born on August 13, 1946 in Toledo, Ohio to the late Edmond and Helen (Wheeler) Schmitt.

Mr. Schmitt retired from General Electric as a Machinist.

James was a member of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, Benedictine Oblate with St. Meinrad Arch Abbey, and the Knights of Columbus.

In his free time, James enjoyed Volunteering with the Saint Mary's Soup Kitchen and ringing the bell for Salvation Army. He was also a Tour Guide for the Sacred Heart Basilica of Notre Dame.

He is survived by his dear friend, Heidi Askren; Heidi's daughters, Jessica and Jordan; and their family.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Joan Schmitt; and a brother, Peter Schmitt.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Saint Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, 315 S Line St, Columbia City with calling one hour prior. Calling will also be Tuesday, October 3, 2023 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Divine mercy Funeral Home, 3500 lake Ave., Fort Wayne.
