Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joan K. Colligan, who left us peacefully on April 24, 2026, at the age of 89. She was born on May 9, 1936, in Aurora, IL, to Joseph and Albina (Schmitt) Strotz. Joan lived a life filled with love, laughter, faith, and a passion for teaching that touched the lives of many in the Fort Wayne community.

On May 18,1957, she married Charles Colligan, her beloved husband of 63 years. Joan is survived by her children, Michael Colligan, Mary Joan (James) Stiff, Kathryn (David) Fisher, Charles (Elizabeth) Colligan, Jr., and her grandchildren, Allison (Steven) Loudenback, Sarah (Carter) Delaney, Stephen (Morgan) Colligan, James Stiff, Kevin Stiff, Brendan Fisher, Sean Fisher, Caitlin Fisher, Charles Colligan III, Jack Colligan, Joe Colligan, Clare Colligan, and her great-grandchildren, Eliza, Teddy, Rory, Liam, Charlotte, Jude, and Maya Jo and special family friend Joyce Colligan who will cherish her memory and the many lessons she imparted throughout their lives. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles and son Thomas Colligan.

Joan graduated valedictorian from Madonna High School, attended St. Mary College, and graduated from University of St. Francis. She was a substitute math teacher for Bishop Dwenger High School. She was a member of Tri Kappa Sorority, Christ Child Society, and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Joan and Charlie enjoyed wintering in Jupiter, FL, and spending summer days at Coldwater Lake. She enjoyed playing golf, tennis and bridge, reading, and volunteering over the years at numerous museums and charities.

We invite friends and family to join us in celebrating Joan's life. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1502 E. Wallen Rd., Ft. Wayne on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 11:00 AM., with visitation beginning one hour prior. There will also be visitation held at Divine Mercy Funeral Home-Cedar Canyons, 1986 W. Cedar Canyons Rd., Huntertown on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 3:00-7:00pm, with a rosary prayed at 2:30pm.

Joan will be laid to rest at Catholic Cemetery in Fort Wayne. She leaves behind a legacy of love, education, and memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Rest in peace, Joan; you will be greatly missed.

Preferred memorials are requested to St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen and Christ Child Society of Fort Wayne.
