Joseph A. Alter, 95, of Fort Wayne passed away peacefully on Monday, January 22, 2024 at Saint Anne Home, Fort Wayne, IN and is now resting in the arms of Jesus. Joe was born November 13, 1928 in Fort Wayne, IN to the late Frank and Elenora (Schone) Alter and was a graduate of Central High School. He earned his pharmacy degree from Purdue University. He served as Corporal in the Army and while stationed at Fort Monroe in Virginia he met the love of his life, Shirley, whom he married in 1955. After returning to Fort Wayne with his bride, he worked at Lapp Brothers Pharmacy and Stiver Pharmacy before eventually taking over ownership and running Alter Pharmacy at the corner of Broadway and Washington until 1980. He then worked at St. Joseph Hospital in the Outpatient pharmacy and at Jefferson Pharmacy before retiring. Joe was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Joe is survived by his three daughters, Carol (Mark) Baker of Temperance, MI, Susan (Tom) Young of San Marcos, CA, Lois (Cris) Nern of Sedro Woolley, WA; 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley of 68 years; brothers Albert Alter, Ray Alter, Jerome Alter, and Frank Alter; sisters Mary Jane Cains, Maxine Gordon, and Helen Darling.

A Catholic Service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Divine Mercy Funeral Home 3500 Lake Avenue, Fort Wayne, IN with calling one hour prior. Burial will be at Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne, IN.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Knights of Columbus Council 451, St. Charles Borromeo Church, St. Anne Communities, Alzheimer's Association, Heartland Hospice.
