Obituary

Judith "Judy" Nix Hallgren passed away at home, on November 9, 2024, surrounded by family. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She always encouraged her three children and three grandchildren in all they did. She attended all sporting events for all her kids and grandkids and was there for every special event at school.

While raising her kids was Judy's first priority, she did balance a variety of jobs throughout her life.  She worked in her kids' schools, as a childcare provider, in sales at Meyers McCarthy Clothing, at Sears Service Center in customer service, and ended with over 20 years at Carriage Paper Products in sales. The family soon realized that Judy was the real salesperson of the family. She had a great rapport with people and people trusted her, as they should because she was always honest. She just had that special something that made her easy to be loved by anyone that knew her or came in contact with her. She was fun, funny, kind, sweet, and at the same time, a strong leader in the family.

Judy was an amazing caregiver to her husband for the last four years after he suffered a stroke and became confined to a wheelchair. She always put his needs first, once again sacrificing herself and never complaining. She displayed the true meaning of marriage…  life giving love, commitment, and fidelity.

Judy has four sisters, one being an identical twin. She was close to all of them as they emailed or called each other daily. Her twin was her partner in crime and was there for her until the end.

After her recent diagnosis but before her brain surgery, Judy joked about how she was living her "best life." She enjoyed being waited on and having no responsibilities. Everything she ate was "wonderful" and she appreciated anything and everything someone did for her, including at the hospital. When she barely had the energy to talk, you would hear her say thank you to anyone that helped her or was just there to take her blood. She took care of people her whole life and knew what hard work it was and therefore appreciated those who were now taking care of her.

Lastly, and most importantly, Judy was a woman of God. She was the family's rock for faith. In the early 90's she and Cliff started attending a prayer group through the Cathedral downtown. This led them to attend several large faith conferences held at Notre Dame University. This was a pivotal time of spiritual renewal that continued until the end, impacting her family greatly.

In the mid 90's, Judy and her husband Cliff became members of Saint Elizabeth where they were very involved in the parish through Christ Renews His Parish and Small Faith Groups.  They soon began a monthly rosary group that they hosted in their home for over 20 years. That rosary group is still going strong today hosted by another member of that group.

Although being diagnosed with a terminal brain cancer, Judy was at peace and knew her journey was in God's hands.

Judy led by example showing what it meant to love God, work hard, and sacrifice for family. Her one true desire was for her kids and grandkids to do well and be happy. The best way to honor Judy is to follow her example of faith, hard work and sacrifice…  and pursue good, healthy, holy lives…  "Judy, we thank you, we love you, and we will always remember you with grateful hearts."

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Cliff Hallgren; sons, Ken and Bob (Julie) Hallgren; daughter, Jackie Hallgren; grandchildren, Casey and Adam Hallgren and Hudson Brooks; and sisters, Janet Briner, Susan Callison, Sharon Ruhe, and Shirley Smith.   Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Mary Nix.
