Obituary

Marland Joseph Michael Myers (87) passed away in the early morning of July 15, 2024 at Cedarhurst Senior Living in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His son Mark and daughter-in-law Rachel joined him for dinner the evening prior and said that he was in good spirits. We believe that his soul, as a man of the Catholic faith, has been received into God's peaceful fold.

Marty, as he was known, was born on September 19, 1936 in Wabash, Indiana to his predeceased parents Russell and Mary Helen Myers. He was the only boy in a house full of girls. Three sisters predeceased him: Beverly (Fred) Hight of Indianapolis; Sue (George) Middleton of Wabash; and Marilyn (John) Hoy of Wabash- Marty's fraternal twin. He is survived by his youngest sibling Linda (Carl) Zierman of California.

Marty graduated from Wabash High School in 1954 after which he entered the U.S. Army on October 6, 1959. His service was overseas and he was honorably discharged from the 13th Calvary with a Good Conduct Medal on January 19, 1962. He did 2 years of post-secondary studies (1962-64) and began work as a radiologic technologist at St. Joseph's Hospital in 1964. He served at St. Joseph's for over 20 years and then worked at downtown Parkview Hospital until his retirement in 2006. Most of his tenure was as a technologist except for a short term as a system analyst for the hospital.

In 1963 on a regular work day, he took a shine to a woman he saw watching the news about Kennedy's assassination. Eventually, he married that woman, his wife of 60 years, Gloria Ann Rizzo on October 3, 1964 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. She survives him as a resident of Heritage Pointe of Nursing Home of Ft. Wayne. They made their home and raised their family in New Haven. Marty is survived by his four children: Monica (Jim) Maddalone of Oregon; Tony (Deb) Myers of Kentucky; Mark (Rachel) Myers of New Haven, and Angela (partner Jim) Myers of Tennessee. His children remember their father as having a strong work ethic and a desire to provide for his family's needs. His sacrifice of long hours made possible such things as braces, tennis lessons, and college tuition to name a few.

During child-rearing days Marty played on a basketball league. He was also an avid golfer, as time allowed (after the kids were grown and out of the house), especially once he was retired. His crowning achievement was a hole in one on June 25, 2000 at Pond-A-River golf course, the 11th hole (par 3) at 114 yards. He loved to take care of his Cadillac and play bridge at the local community center. He was a devoted Catholic and a committed parishioner at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in New Haven. For decades he served as a reader and cantor during the regular mass.

Although he was a man of few words, his son Mark remembered a bit of Dad's advice: "To do the best you can do whatever you do, be honest, fair and treat others with respect… and don't eat yellow snow." The family is grateful for his peaceful passing and trusts the Lord to provide comfort during this time.
