Mary Lou Shovlin, 95, of Fort Wayne, died Thursday July 18, 2024, at St. Anne Home. Mary Lou was born in Fort Wayne on December 21, 1928, the daughter of (the late) R. Paul and Viola (Wyss) Rohyans. She graduated from Central Catholic High School with the Class of '46 and on May 28, 1955, she married Richard Shovlin, who preceded her in death on April 25, 1996.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mary Lou was also preceded by her brothers, Richard Rohyans and David Rohyans, and her sisters, Margaret Ann Rorick and Diana Urick, and nieces, Colleen Clauser and Karen McMeekin.
Survivors include her nieces & nephews, Roseanne (Daniel) Conroy of Wolcottville, Sally Still of New Haven, Julie Moore of Goshen, Kathryn (Gregory) Clayton of Westfield, Debbie (Randy) Burge of Placentia CA, Christine (Christopher) Myers of Fort Wayne, Tim (Deanna) Rorick of New Haven, Steve (Diane) Rorick of New Haven, Greg (Michele) Rorick of Fort Wayne, Paul (Amy) Rohyans of Marysville OH, Mark (Amy) Rohyans of Fort Wayne, James (Diane) Shovlin of Grabill, Dennis (Noemi) Urick of Fort Wayne, David (Gina) Urick of Fort Wayne, Daniel (Tammy) Urick of Auburn, Donald (Bethany) Urick of Fort Wayne and several great nieces & nephews and great-great nieces & nephews.
Mary Lou retired in 1984 from the accounts/billing dept. at GTE, beginning at the original Home Telephone Co, which evolved into GTE, then Verizon (and now Frontier). She was devout in her faith and an active member of St. Jude Catholic Church, where she volunteered at the school, reading to the children; worked alongside the funeral dinner team for many years, assisted with money-counting after Mass, and was a member of the Rosary Sodality and the Legion of Mary. Mary Lou was an avid sports fan, especially Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame; and she enjoyed playing cards, golf and bowling. She cherished the time she spent with family & friends, particularly enjoying the lifelong monthly luncheons with friends, many of whom she knew as far back as from grade school and high school.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:00pm Thursday July 25, 2024 in St. Jude Catholic Church, 2155 Randallia Dr. with visitation from 12-1pm in the church. Visitation is also on Wednesday from 4-8pm at Divine Mercy Funeral Home, 3500 Lake Ave. with the Rosary at 4:00pm. Entombment in Catholic Cemetery.
