Sternberger
April 9, 1930 – December 1, 2023
Maxine T. Sternberger, 93, of Fort Wayne, passed away Friday, December 1, 2023 at Saint Anne Home.
She was born on April 9, 1930 in Monroeville to the late Paul and Clara (Minich) Martin.
In 1953 in Monroeville, she married James M. Sternberger. He preceded her in death in 2005.
Maxine graduated from the St. Joseph School of Nursing and was awarded the Ideal Nurse Award. She went on to work for St. Joseph Hospital in the Polio Unit and then as a surgical floor nurse. Maxine retired as a nurse at Turtle Creek Nursing Home where she worked with her sister.
Maxine was a charter member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was active in the Rosary Sodality, Altar Flowers, and preparing funeral dinners. She then became a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
She was also a long time volunteer with the Franciscan Center.
In her free time, Maxine enjoyed baking, especially pies, tending to her yard and flowers, and loved to play Scrabble.
She is survived by her children, Steven (Carol) Sternberger, Diane (Ron) Menze, and Michael (Barbara) Sternberger; grandchildren, Erik (Ashley), Nicole (Steven), Laura (Brendan), Anna (Jeff), Allison, Zachary (Yoko), and Hayley; great-grandchildren, Madison, Bennett, and Moira; and a brother, Leo Martin.
Also preceding her in death were siblings, Marvene Zuber, Geraldine Kline, Joan Bauman, and Gerald Martin.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church 4500 Fairfield Ave., Fort Wayne with calling one hour prior. Calling will also be Friday, December 8, 2023 from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Divine Mercy Funeral Home, 3500 Lake Ave., Fort Wayne with a Rosary at 3 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to Masses in remembrance of Maxine, Kate's Kart, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
