Obituary

Nancy Sue Shuman (Schlink), 88, of Fort Wayne, passed away on July 27, 2026. Born September 30, 1937, in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of Leo Schlink and Florencia (Humphreys) Schlink.

Nancy attended St. Patrick’s School and Central Catholic High School. She spent more than 30 years with Challenge Tool & Manufacturing, where she was known for her reliability, candor, and resourcefulness.

Earlier in life she married Lawrence “Larry” Shuman, and together they raised seven children. Larry preceded her in death, and Nancy never remarried.

Nancy was fiercely independent and possessed a brilliant, biting wit that carried her through life’s most difficult moments. She had a deep compassion for animals and devoted much of her time to caring for homeless cats, offering shelter and kindness to any stray that found its way to her door.

She is survived by her brother Michael (Esther) Schlink of Plano, Texas; and her children: Richard (Minsook) Shuman, San Antonio, Texas; Deborah (Ed) Handshoe, Shipshewana, Indiana; Danne’ Smith, New Haven, Indiana; Judith Salsbury, Grabill, Indiana; Derek (Audrey) Shuman, Palm Desert, California; Karen Knapp, New Haven, Indiana; and Glenn Shuman, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Nancy also leaves behind 18 grandchildren, 21 great‑grandchildren, and 1 great‑great‑grandchild, along with extended family and friends who will remember her strength, humor, and unwavering love.

Her family takes comfort in knowing she is at peace and reunited with those who went before her.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Divine Mercy Funeral Home, 3500 Lake Avenue, Fort Wayne, IN 46805 with visitation one hour prior. Visitation will also be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, at Divine Mercy Funeral Home. Entombment at Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne. Memorials can be written to the Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control or to Cancer Services of NE Indiana in Nancy’s name.
