Obituary

Rick Alan Sowers, 74, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on May 11, 2025. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on January 9, 1951, he was the son of the late Marvin and Jeanette (Crum) Sowers.

He is survived by his wife and son. He was the loving husband of 40 years to Jane (Campbell) Sowers who he met on a snow skiing trip to Michigan, and the loving father to their son Casey.

Rick was a proud veteran of the Army having served in Germany during the Vietnam War. He was known for his skills as a finish carpenter in the construction industry. His craftmanship and attention to detail earned him respect from both colleagues and clients, having approached his work with a dedication that shone through in every project he undertook.

He especially loved his time on Pretty Lake, his fishing trips on Pickeral and Crooked Lakes in Michigan and visiting with special friends who lived there. He enjoyed outdoor sports including water, snow and cross-country skiing, kayaking, fishing, and hunting.

He took pride in his flowers, vegetable garden and fruit trees, and enjoyed sharing his bounty with friends.

Most of all, Rick was a dedicated father to Casey! He made sure Casey had as many opportunities as possible to lead a fulfilling life. Throughout his life he used his skills to make adaptive ways for Casey to fish, ride horses, mow lawns (by steering the mower with his feet), ride a bike, play boccia ball, attend camps, play a piano keyboard and give back to his community by volunteering at Turnstone.

Rick also enjoyed volunteering and utilizing services provided at Turnstone, a not-for-profit organization providing a comprehensive continuum of supporting services addressing the unique needs of people with disabilities. He also volunteered at Dusty Dreams where Casey rides horses.

Rick is also survived by many special cousins and friends, the family golden doodle (Hannah), his brother Steve (Dianne), and sister Linda (Ken). In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his in-laws, Bob and Cleo Campbell and special cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.

Family and friends are invited to join us for a celebration of his life on Friday, May 30, 2025 from 5-8 PM at Divine Mercy Funeral Home at 1986 W. Cedar Canyon Road, Huntertown, IN 46748, to share stories and cherished memories of Rick. There will be Military Honors by the U.S. Army at 7 PM. Please feel free to come casually dressed in blue jeans and t-shirts or other comfortable attire!

Rick will be deeply missed, but his spirit and legacy will continue to inspire others. In lieu of flowers, preferred memorials are to Turnstone Center for Children and Adults with Disabilities in Fort Wayne or Dusty Dreams in Avilla.
