Sandra Louise
Kowal
November 6, 1957 – February 25, 2025
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Sandra Louise Kowal, who left this world on February 25, 2025, at the age of 67. She was born on November 6, 1957, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Francis E. & Grace A. (Troop) Ley and raised in Avilla, IN. Sandy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished friend.
Sandy dedicated her life to her family and home and was known for her warm spirit and the love she poured into everything she did. She graduated from East Noble High School in 1976 and attended Indiana University. She started her life of service early, earning her crown and is the reigning American Legion Post 240 Auxiliary Poppy Queen in Avilla. She spent over a decade volunteering as the School Leasing Coordinator for Fort Wayne Youtheatre. Sandy worked for the Allen County Small Claims Court and as an accountant throughout the years. While accounting at Weingart Inc., Sandy met the love of her life, Walt. They were married at Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church on July 20, 1985. She later retired as a Domestic Engineer where she could focus on what mattered to her most, her family and loved ones. Sandy was always ready at the drop of a hat to be there for her family and friends, with a smile on her face and love in her heart for everyone. She attended St. Nicholas Eastern Orthodox Cathedral, where she was an active member of the Women's Guild, heading up bake sales and volunteering countless hours of time. Sandy enjoyed staying busy. She loved traveling with her husband, adventuring, scuba diving, gardening, and mowing the grass correctly. Her hobbies also included writing pysanky (Ukrainian Easter eggs), cooking, hockey, quilting, cross-stitching, bird watching, hiking to waterfalls in the National Parks, genealogy – but her biggest love was supporting her family in everything they do.
She is survived by her loving husband, Wladimir Kowal; her son, Shaun (Aubrey) Davis; and her daughter, Nikita (Aaron Geese) Kowal, nine grandchildren, Mallory, Sophia, Addie Grace, Jackson, Charlie, Thomas, Andrew, Katelyn Ellen Louise, and Hayden; brother, Michael (Lynn) Ley, sister-in-law, Maria Tschebykin, sister-in-law Jennifer Ley, and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Grace Ley, and a brother, Timothy Ley. The love and support they shared will always be remembered.
Family and friends are invited to join us in celebrating Sandy's life. A public visitation will take place at Divine Mercy Funeral Home-Cedar Canyons, 1986 W. Cedar Canyons Rd., Huntertown, IN on March 6, 2025 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm, with a Trisagion service at 7pm.
