Shirley A. (Heffelfinger) Underwood, 91, entered eternal life on August 27, 2026, in Fort Wayne, IN. Shirley lived a full and vibrant life dedicated to her family and her passion for teaching at Huntertown Elementary School, and the history of Huntertown, IN.

In retirement, Shirley loved attending her grandchildren's sporting events, and spending time at Lake Wawasee with her family.

Shirley leaves behind her cherished children: Cathy (Leo) Dauenhauer, Scott (Mary) Underwood, Brian (Carol) Underwood, and Sue (Ed) Herran, grandchildren Dr. Cassie (Scott) Mylnek, Dr. Emily (Jon) Zolnik, Allison (Andy) Uthoff, Lauren Underwood, Landon Underwood, Meghan Underwood, Gabriella Underwood, Brian-Miguel Underwood, Haley (Alex) Mitchell, Dr. Reid (Maddie) Herran, Eli (Hannah) Herran, and 9 great-grandchildren, along with her beloved brother, Richard Heffelfinger. She will be remembered for the countless memories created with her family.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Hugh Underwood and her parents, Taft Heffelfinger and Helen (Stolman) Heffelfinger.

In honor of Shirley's life, we invite friends and family to join us for a celebration of her life. The family will receive relatives and friends from 5:00pm-8:00pm, on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Divine Mercy Funeral Home-Cedar Canyons, 1986 W. Cedar Canyons Rd, Huntertown, IN 46748. The family will gather privately for a graveside service at Cedar Creek Cemetery in Auburn, IN.
