September 12, 1955 – January 22, 2025
Steven P. Herman, age 69, of Grabill, IN passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. Born September 12, 1955, he was the son of the late Gus and Maryann (Prendergast) Herman. Steve was a graduate of Bishop Dwenger High School, class of 1974. He married the love of his life, Karen (Clifford) on June 7, 1975. They spent the next 49 years building a life together and watching their family grow. Steve worked as a conductor for Norfolk Southern Railroad for 38 years before retiring in 2015. Steve was committed to public service and served his community in many ways. He served on the Township Advisory Board for Cedar Creek Township for 12 years and served as the Township Trustee for 4 terms. Steve was a volunteer fire fighter for the Northeast Allen County Fire District and also served in the roles of Captain, District Chief, and Chief Retired. He was a Reserve Officer for the Allen County Police Department for over 10 years. Steve also volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America and served as a Committee Chair for Troop 49.
When not working, Steve enjoyed camping in his RV. He also enjoyed traveling with Karen, just "seeing America." Family was very important to Steve, and he loved being a grandfather and spending quality time with his grandchildren. His absence in the lives of his family and friends will be felt every day.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Karen Herman; children, Samuel (LaVon) Herman, Patrick (Tara) Herman, and Jennifer (Randy) Wacasey; grandchildren, Joey, Kaeda, Michael, Ava, Archie, James, Layla, Ryan, and Reagan; sisters, Sandra (Rick) Mansfield, Judy Herman, Cindy (Jon) Extine, and Terry (Ron) Dorohoff; and numerous extended family. Steve was preceded in death by his parents.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 27, 2025, at Divine Mercy Funeral Home, 3500 Lake Avenue, Fort Wayne, IN 46805 with visitation one hour prior. Visitation will also be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at the funeral home. Memorials can be written to the American Diabetes Association www.diabetes.org in Steve's name. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy can be left at www.divinemercyfuneralhome.com for the family.
