William A.
Nichter
September 16, 1953 – February 20, 2025
William "Bill" Nichter, 71, passed away from brain cancer on February 20, 2025. He had battled brain tumors and their seizures for more than 20 years. He was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, but grew up in Bluffton, Indiana. He attended Norwell High School and was a graduate of Ball State University, where he majored in piano and minored in voice and French. He was a talented artist as well as a pianist and trained classical singer. He was an avid opera lover. Music was his only joy. His first major work experience was for the Social Security Administration in Chicago. He returned to Fort Wayne and worked for Lincoln National for many years, first in Group Health and later in American Legacy Annuities. Bill underwent a major religious conversion experience at age 27 when he read a biography of St. Pio of Pietrelcina. He became a man of prayer. He became a member of the Secular Franciscan Order. He was an adult altar server for the Cathedral in Fort Wayne until 1998 when he became too disabled to continue. In the spirit of St. Paul, who once listed his hardships (Corinthians 11:25), Bill, in a somewhat humorous mood, once listed his prayers. He calculated that by age 70 he had read the entire Bible 16 times, attended Mass 5,000 times, and had done over 5,000 Holy Hours in front of the exposed Blessed Sacrament. In addition, he had prayed 36,000 Rosaries, 38,000 Litanies, and many other prayers such as the daily Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3 p.m. and the daily Morning and Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours, which is a requirement for Secular Franciscans. He was the son of the late Ralph and Connie Nichter. He is survived by his six siblings (Diane, Kathleen, Carolyn, James, Michael, and Robert) as well as several nieces and nephews. The family will receive relatives and friends from 10:00am to 12:00pm on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at Divine Mercy Funeral Home-Cedar Canyons, 1986 W. Cedar Canyons Rd., Huntertown, IN 46748. The Rosary will be prayed at 10:00am. The Mass will follow at 12:30pm at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Fort Wayne. Burial will be at Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne. In lieu of flowers, he requests that Masses be purchased and said for the repose of his soul. Online condolences may be left at www.divinemercyfuneralhome.com.
