Paul Douglas Staight, 90, of Fort Wayne, died Sunday November 12, 2023 at Grey Stone Health & Rehabilitation Center. Doug was born in Fort Wayne on May 24, 1933, the son of the late A. Paul and Elvah (Flashbaugh) Staight. After graduating from Northside High School, Doug enlisted in the Air Force to serve his country. Upon returning to Fort Wayne, he began working at Magnavox, where he met the love of his life, Marie (Sorg) Staight.
They were married on October 13, 1956, and Marie survives after 67 years of marriage, along with their children, Matt (Karen) Staight, Tom (March) Staight, and Mary (Tim) Gallaway, and Doug’s sister, Caroline (Terry) Ryman. While Doug took great pride in being a father, his role as a grandfather and great-grandfather brought him even greater joy. He and Marie were blessed to have several grandchildren: Kaitlynn (Brent Cousino) Gallaway, Trevor (Kayla) Gallaway, Andrew Staight, William Staight, Nicholas Staight, Stephanie Staight, and Morgan (Brandon) Shofner, as well as great-grandchildren, Averie, Ensley, and Easton Gallaway, Autumn and Dominick Staight, and Emma Shofner. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Robert Staight, and a sister Marceille Cade.
Doug was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he served as an usher for many years, and the Knights of Columbus. Doug and Marie bought a Christmas tree farm in Spencerville, where their family created cherished memories over the years by helping countless families make holidays special, year after year. The farm continues through his daughter’s family to carry on the tradition started by Doug and Marie. Doug passed on his love of camping, sailing, and auto racing to his family. He also found joy in riding his bicycle, tinkering with his shortwave radio, repairing electronic equipment, and contributing to St. Joseph Church.
