Karen Mertes passed away on June 4, 2022. Born March 13, 1942, to Niles and Mary Morgan in Richmond, Indiana, she moved to Fort Wayne as a teenager. She graduated from New Haven High School and attended International Business College before working for Brotherhood Mutual Insurance. On May 11, 1968, she married Gene Mertes. Together, they shared 54 years and raised 2 children who are forever grateful for the example they provided of how to raise a family with love, kindness, and concern for others. Not all people are able to find their true calling, but Karen certainly did. Being a wife, mom, and grandma was her passion and she devoted herself to Gene, their kids, and their grandkids. She was their biggest supporter, never missing a school program, a ballgame, or any other important event in their lives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Matthew (Amanda) Mertes and Theresa Rigg. Her grandchildren are Christopher (Liz) Reed, Kelly Reed, Jeffrey Mertes, Renee Reed, and Grace Horton. Her great-grandchildren are Ryan and Kyle Reed. Karen is also survived by her brother Kevin (Madelyn) Morgan, along with several cousins and numerous nieces and nephews.
