Clifford Winfield (Bill) Lonis, 93, of New Haven, Indiana, passed away peacefully in his home, December 27, 2018. He is the son of the late Claude E and Anna C Lonis.
Bill grew up in Fort Wayne and attended Central High School, where he met his wife-to-be, Kay McCarron. They enjoyed seventy-one years of marriage. The majority of Bill’s career was spent at Rae Magnet Wire.
Along the way, Bill enjoyed a love of many sports—golf, tennis, volleyball, basketball, bowling, ping-pong—and passed on that love of the sport and good sportsmanship to his children and grandchildren. He always had time to help someone practice their game. His home was the site of many games of H-O-R-S-E, 21 and round-robin ping-pong “tournaments” with family and friends. Bill was known as “Backboard Bill” on the tennis courts and played tennis and golf into his eighties.
He is survived by sons David, Cary, Randy, of the New Haven area and Dan of Roanoke, IN, nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He predeceased by his wife, Kay, and oldest son, Larry.
A private, family graveside service will be held Saturday, January 26, 2019. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
